Geography & Climate

Agra City is located on Indo-Gangetic plains and experiences continental climate. Best time to visit the city is during October-November and February-March, when the temperature remains within comfortable range of 16 to 25°C. Temperature during summers (April to September) could reach up to 45°C and dry winds blow through the city during the season. The city experiences Monsoon rains and showers from July to September. Average annual rainfall of Agra remains around 70 cm or 27 inches.

Getting There

By Air : You can take connecting flights to Agra from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Some flights also originate from Jaipur. Agra Airport is 6 km from the City Center, and some flights originate from here that connect it with other cities of India.

By Train : Agra falls on the main line that connects capital city Delhi (Station Code: NDLS) with Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay, station code CSTM) and also Delhi with Chennai (Station Code : MAS). Around 20 trains run daily between Delhi and Agra, and least 4 trains run daily that connect Agra with Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata (Calcutta). Agra Cantt. (Station Code: AGC) is the main station of Agra which lies on southeast of Taj Mahal and is a short ride away from it. Agra Fort (Station Code: AF) station is near Agra and trains run from here to Kanpur, Kolkatta, Gorakhpur and Guwahati. Raja ki Mandi (Station Code: RKM) is a small station; Taj Express and Intercity Express run through it. Luxury Trains: Palace on Wheels, Royal Rajasthan on Wheels and Buddhist Special Train arrive at Agra on regular intervals. You can experience the royal traditions of India by travelling in these trains.

By Road : Idgah is the largest bust stand in Agra which connects it with all major cities of northern India. National Highway No. 2 (NH2) connects Agra with Delhi. You can commute to Agra from Delhi on this 200 km long stretch via car also, and it will take you hardly 4 hours to reach there. NH 11 connects Agra with Jaipur; this 255 km stretch could be covered in 5 hours. Gwalior is 120 km away on NH3 while Kanpur is 285 km away on NH2.

Taj Mahal Agra – Magnificent and the unrivalled
Taj Mahal mausoleum is the most prominent attraction of Agra. It is situated on the banks of Yamuna river. The pristine beauty of the Taj attracts millions of tourists from around the world every year. Viewing this sheer poetry in love would be like a slow unfolding of a romantic saga for you. Untouched beauty of this flawless white wonder would leave you amazed. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983. It is counted among the Seven Wonders of the World. The mausoleum was built by Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. Its construction started in 1631 and it took 22 years to compete this wonder in white in the year 1653.

Agra Red Fort :
Agra Red Fort has a modest beginning in 10th century when it was a simple fortress made of mud of bricks. Successive rulers continued construction of the fortress and it was during the reign of Akbar (1564-1570) that it got prominence and was converted into a fort. It was partially converted into a palace during the reign of Shah Jahan, who was imprisoned here by his own son Aurangzeb. Khas Mahal and Sheesh Mahal are ornamental halls of the Agra Red Fort that portray the splendor and brilliance of Mogul architecture. Jehangir Palace, Jodha Bai ka Rauza, Sikandra Fort, Octagonal Tower and Chini ka Rauza are other main attractions of Agra.

Curios to shop in Agra
Agra tours is famous for handicrafts and marble inlay work. There are several stores that sell brassware, leather goods, jewelry, antiques, carpets, bags, jackets, shoes, vases, artifacts, handbags etc. You can shop for gift items and antiques at Kinari Bazaar, Sadar Bazaar and Munro Road. Government emporia and souvenir shops are located at Taj Shopping Arcade, which is near Taj Mahal.

Delicacies to enjoy in Agra
Agra tours is famous for its traditional cuisine Petha, which is made with pumpkin and glucose, and is flavored with sweet rose water. Also try Gajjaks, which are sweet biscuits made with jaggery and sesame seeds. Dal Moth snack is also a specialty of Agra. Besides this you can also enjoy Mogul, Continental and Indian delicacies at various hotels in Agra. There are several fast food joints where you can have a quick bite on pizzas, burgers, sandwiches etc.

Brief History
It is generally accepted that Sultan Sikandar Lodhi, the ruler of Delhi Sultanate founded Agra in 1504. After Sultan’s death, his son Sultan Ibrahim Lodhi ran the sultanate which later fell to Babar in the battle of Panipat in 1526. The city served as the capital of Mogul Empire in India and was known as Akbarabad during the reign of Akbar. Later, Mogul capital was shifted to Shahjahanbad in 1649 by emperor Shahjahan. It was Shahjahan who gave Akbarabad its most prized monument, Taj Mahal mausoleum which was completed in 1653. Shahjahan later shifted his capital to Delhi. After the decline of Mogul empire, Akbarabad came under the influence of Marathas and Jats, and was called Agra. It fell into the hands of British Raj in 1803. The Presidency of Agra was established in 1835. Agra is the birth place of Radhaswami faith, which has two million adherents worldwide.
