The fourth largest metropolitan city in India, Chennai City is the seat of culture and learning in South India. It is also India's third largest commercial and industrial centre and the automobile capital of India. Lying on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is a city famous for its beaches, historical monuments, and its rich cultural heritage Popularly regarded as the "Gateway to the South", Chennai tours presents culture that is distinctly different from that of northern India. Music, dance and all other art forms of the South are cherished and nurtured in this city, which, though industrialized, continues to be traditional and conventional in many ways. From traditional vegetarian fair to fast foods, from nine-yard sarees to the latest in fashion, from ancient temple architecture to modern high-rise.

Chennai Tourist Places

Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple : Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple is one of the famous temple of Chennai. The temple 'Gopuram' (tower) is characteristic of Dravidian style architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple has some beautiful sculptures. The Kapaleswarar temple famed for being the site of a miracle is sculpturally represented in the shrine of the saint in front of the temple flagmast. Among other special features of the temple are the bronze statues of 63 Saivite saints, canonised for leading exemplary lives of devotion and penance.
Fort ST. George: Fort St. George occupies a place of pride and prominence in Chennai. It was built in 1640 AD, by the British East India Company under the direct supervision of Francis Day and Andrew Cogon. The Fort Museum is the repository of rare exhibits of weapons, uniforms, coins, costumes, medals and some other artifacts dating back to the British period. The flag staff at Fort St. George is still the tallest in India. The structure is completely build of teakwood.

Valluvar Kottam : Dedicated to Poet Thiruvalluvar, The monument is built in a shape of temple chariot and contains an imposing and lively statue of the poet. The memorial to the poet-saint Tiruvalluvar is shaped like a temple chariot and is, in fact, the replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur.

The Marina : Stretching two miles, from the Coovum River's mouth, south of the Fort, till the northern boundaries of the 16th century Portuguese town of San Thome, is this magnificent beach drive and promenade. Nearby is the samadhi of M.G Ramachandran, one of the most popular Chief Ministers of this State. In between, sentinels on the promenade, are several statues of Tamil scholars and Mahatma Gandhi. Chennai's Aquarium is also on this beach.

Birla Planetarium : The Birla Planetarium at Kotturpuram, between Adyar and Guindy, is the most modern planetarium in the country. Adjoining the planetarium is a Periyar Science and Technology Museum.

Guindy National Park : Guindy National Park was part of Governor's Estate. Now it is fragmented and the major part is a thickly forested game sanctuary where the spotted deer and the black buck roam about and a wealth of smaller fauna thrive. This is the country's only Wild Life Sanctuary within a city's limits.

How to reach Chennai

There By Air : Chennai is well connected Air. Kamaraj National and Anna International Airports are situated at Meenambakkam about 20 kms. from city. There are frequent flights from chennai airport to all of the major cities of India and World.

By Rail : There are two major railway stations in Chennai. Chennai Central is the bigger one and connects the city by broad gauge as also broad gauge trains to all major cities and towns of India.

By Road : Chennai is connected by good network of roads with all-important places in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India. You may rent a car with popular private cab owners.
Sea A passenger liner to Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands connects Chennai to these islands in the Bay of Bengal. The Andaman and Nicobar Administration and the Shipping Corporation of India control reservations.

Climate : Chennai is situated on the south east coast of India and lies in the tropical zone of climate. As a result, it mostly experiences hot and humid weather. The weather is hot and humid for most of the year. The best time to visit Chennai is from November to March since the weather at this time is pleasant and cool. The temperature during the peak season never falls below 20 deg C.
