Shillong City, the capital of Meghalaya, is a hill town, situated in the northeastern part of India. Shillong looks like a cluster of red roofs from the sky. Narrow hill roads skirted by tall pine trees are lined with cottages made of wood. The place, the people and the climate all combined together to create an amiable atmosphere, to make Shillong Meghalaya an ideal holiday destination throughout the year. Shillong has beautiful lakes and waterfalls, and is set in pine forests and green mountains and monasteries.

There are a lot of things to do in Shillong for the curious tourist. A beautiful, charming town, Shillong invites a lazy exploration.

Police Bazar - It is alive with shops, restaurants and hotels. It is a convenient central hub from where visitors can make forays to the town's various tourist attractions, and journeys out of town to other tourist centers. The Laitumukra area is awash with cyber cafes, poolrooms and eateries making it a popular hub for the youth.

Butterfly Musuem - The Butterfly Museum in Riatsamthiah hosts a large collection of mounted butterflies and local insects, showcasing the species of the area. The State Museum, sadly a bit sketchy offers displays on different aspects of Khasi lifestyle.

Churches - Shillong city is also famous for its churches. The most famous among them are the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, the Grotto Church and the All Saints Church located in front of the State Central Library.

Waterfalls - There are so many falls in and around Shillong city. The Elephant Falls are located at a distance of 12 km from town. The gushing and powerful Bishop and Beadon Falls cascade down into the same valley. The appropriately named Spread Eagle Falls has to be seen to be believed. The water rushes off a broad cliff into the low valley below.

Lakes - A small lake in the middle of town, Ward?s Lake is perfect for sun bathing. It is open for boating, with pink lotuses close to the lakeshore. Ward?s Lake also has a Melody Fountain, which plays pop songs from the 90s.

How to reach Shillong

By Air : The main airport is at Guwahati. It is connected by regular flights to the rest of the country. The airport at Umroi is technically the nearest airport

By Rail : The nearest railhead is at Guwahati, which is just 125 km from Shillong.

By Road : Shillong is a three-and-half hours drive from Guwahati.

Climate : Shillong City has a cool climate all through the year. In summers maximum temperature of 24°C and a minimum temperature of 15°C. In winters freezing and minimum temperature reaches 2°C. Snowfalls and fog formations are common here during winter. Shillong can be visited any time in a year, keep off heavy cold winter days in December and January.
