Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Fort is situated in Bikaner city of Rajasthan. The city of Bikaner gradually developed around its old fort over a period of time. It is one of the few forts in Rajasthan which is not built on a hill top. Before the present day Junagarh Fort came into existence, and old fort existed in the region which was built in the year 1478 by Rao Bika, who is credited to be the founder of Bikaner. Rao Bika of Rathor clan was the second son of Maharaja Rao Jodha.

The present day Junagarh Fort was built by Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner who ruled over the region from 1571 AD to 1611 AD. It was built near the old fort on a plain land. Its construction was started in 1589 and completed in 1594. The old fort of Bikaner was demolished a century later after the establishment of the new fort. Junagarh Fort is spread over an area of 5.28 hectares and encompasses royal buildings, pavilions and temples. It was built 1.5 km away from the original fort of the city and was named as Junagarh Fort or the Old Fort when the royal family moved to the Lalgarh Palace.

Raja Karan Singh, who ruled from 1631 to 1639, built Karan Mahal in the fort. Later rulers added more buildings to the fort. Raja Anup Singh, who ruled from 1669 to 1698 carried out large scale additions and modifications to Junagarh Fort complex. He added Zenana or the Palace for Royal Ladies to the fort structure and also refurbished its Diwan-I-Aam, which was then came to be known as Anup Mahal. Ganga Singh, the favorite Rajasthan prince of the British Raj added Ganga Niwas Palace to the fort during his reign that lasted from 1887 to 1943. He also made separate Durbar Hall for royal audience. Ganga Singh also built a new palace in Bikaner and named it as Lalgarh Palace in the honor of his father. He then moved to Lalgarh Palace in 1902 with his royal family.

Junagarh Fort has a quadrangular layout with 1078 yards of peripheral length. The fort complex was surrounded by a 20-25 ft deep moat with base width of 15 ft and top width of 30 ft. The fort walls are 40 feet high and 14.5 feet in thickness. Junagarh Fort complex is fortified with 37 Burj or bastions and seven entry gates. Interiors of the fort are decorated with stone carvings and painted in traditional Rajasthani style. There is a Jhoola (swing) inside Phool Mahal which is preserved till date. The swing was used by the royal family for resting and recreation purposes.

The fort presents an amalgamation of various architectural styles including the Rajasthani, Mogul, Gujarati and the British. Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Chandra Mahal (Moon Palace), Badal Mahal (Cloud Palace), Ganga Mahal, Anup Mahal and Karan Mahal are main regal buildings of Junagarh Fort complex. Tripolia Gate (Triple Gate), Suraj Pol (Sun Gate) and Karan Pol are among the main entrances to the fort which are decorated with beautiful sandstone carvings.

Junagarh Fort Museum was established in 1961 which has a good collection of miniature paintings, howdahs, Sanskrit and Persian manuscripts, royal costumes and war drums. Royal family celebrates Dussehra and Gangaur festivals with much fanfare in the Har Mandir. Junagarh Fort of Gujarat and Junagarh Fort of Jaipur have their own history of origin, which is distinctly different from the Junagarh Fort of Bikaner.
